The Algeciras-Zaragoza rail highway is a milestone in the modernization of rail transport in Spain that will strengthen connectivity between the north and south of the country and serve as a model for the development of sustainable infrastructure at the European level.
Rail & Truck, a leading rail operator in intermodal transport in Spain, has received the first three locomotives and fifteen wagons for use on the future Algeciras-Zaragoza rail highway. The Euro 6000 class locomotives were manufactured by Stadler Valencia, and the 15 double-deck wagons were produced by the Swiss manufacturer Wascosa.
This is the first delivery of the seven electric locomotives and 150 wagons that are part of the order placed by Rail & Truck, a company formed by Ecorail, part of the Magtel group, and Marcotran, and chaired by Julio Gómez Pomar, President of Ecorail. The remainder will be completed throughout this year, as the investment was made with part of the funds from the Government's Recovery and Resilience Plan.
Algeciras-Zaragoza Rail Highway
The Algeciras-Zaragoza rail highway project is a key initiative to promote sustainability in the logistics sector by offering an efficient alternative to road transport. The infrastructure, which will connect the port of Algeciras with Zaragoza, is designed to reduce CO2 emissions, increase intermodal transport capacity, and consolidate Spain's position as a strategic hub in European logistics.
Although its final implementation is scheduled for the end of 2026, Rail & Truck is already working to optimize the use of the rolling stock received. According to Julio Gómez-Pomar, "our immediate objective is to design alternative services that allow the rolling stock to be used, in addition to ensuring its operation and maintenance, while the necessary infrastructure works progress.
Representatives from Rail & Truck, along with the Atlantic and Mediterranean Corridor Commissioners, José Antonio Sebastián and Josep Vicent Boira, were present at the official handover ceremony, held at Stadler's facilities in Valencia.
