On the occasion of the tenth anniversary of the reign of Felipe VI in Spain, 45 aircraft of the Air and Space Force, ranging from the smallest drone to the A330 MRTT, the refueling tanker aircraft manufactured by Airbus Defence and Space, will display two special emblems until June 19, 2025, to honor the head of state.
The logo of one of these decals was designed by the Air and Space Force, schematically translating the official coat of arms of the Royal House and inspired by the insignia of this force, known as Rokiski, maintaining its essence and symbolism. Additionally, the Albacete Air Arsenal was responsible for defining the characteristics of the decals, such as their size and thickness of 8 microns.
Once the decals were created, the final stage consisted of their actual installation on the aircraft: they had to be placed and sealed using a special adhesive and lacquer. It was at this point in the process that ITE joined the activities.Pedro Jesús López Soriano, in charge of the team of 30 ITE employees assigned to MAESAL, specifically the aircraft cleaning and painting workshop, was part of an expedition composed, in addition to him, of three other people: two of them civilian personnel from the Albacete Air Arsenal and a military member who joined as support. “To carry out the labeling of the 45 aircraft, we had to travel during the month of September to the Air Bases of Zaragoza, Villanubla in Valladolid, Matacán in Salamanca; Torrejón, Getafe, and Cuatro Vientos in Madrid; and Alcantarilla and San Javier in Murcia,” Pedro tells us.
He also explained the complexity of the work: “When applying the lacquer, it must be ensured that it does not affect the aerodynamics of the aircraft, and it must be done well so that they do not come off during the months they will remain on the planes and helicopters. Although they could last up to 10 years if not removed earlier.” López Soriano has more than 20 years of experience in the sector, of which the last ten have been working with the ITE team.In 2024, regarding his aircraft painting duties, he had the opportunity to participate in the labeling of the Air and Space Force aircraft involved in the special operation Pacific Skies 2024, a multinational military exercise led by the air forces of Spain, France, and Germany, which involved a deployment in the Indo-Pacific region, covering more than 58,000 kilometers across four continents.“On that occasion, along with two other ITE colleagues, two civilian personnel from MAESAL, and a military support member; in addition to the work carried out at the Albacete Air Base, where we labeled two C.16
Eurofighters from Wing 14, we also traveled to the Morón de la Frontera Air Base in Seville to place the insignia on two other C.16 Eurofighters from Wing 11, and to the Zaragoza Air Base, where we labeled two T.23 A400Ms from Wing 31,” Pedro explained to us. Highlighting a job he is particularly proud of, in May 2024, the year in which the 50th Anniversary of Wing 14 of the Air and Space Force is celebrated, he was part of a team composed of two other ITE employees and a civilian member of the base, who were tasked with labeling a design inspired by the Cervantine figure of Don Quixote on the vertical stabilizer of a C.16 (Eurofighter).
