Magtel has joined the Andalusian Biogas Alliance, which includes nearly one hundred Andalusian institutions, companies, and organizations. The initiative seeks to build 334 biogas and biomethane plants to fully replace fossil-based natural gas in the community's domestic and industrial sectors. That is, to harness the waste produced in agricultural and livestock farming processes and convert it into renewable energy through biogas.
These plants are the number envisioned by the National Biogas Association (Sedigas) if Andalusia's potential for utilizing agricultural waste to generate energy is fully exploited—15% of Spain's total potential.
The association estimates that with the production of these plants, natural gas could be eliminated, as biogas would cover all Andalusian demand. Building the 334 plants would require an investment of €5.5 billion and the creation of 8,000 direct and indirect jobs in operation and maintenance, plus 70,000 in the construction phase.
Magtel's Director of Hydraulics and Environment, Arturo Buenaventura, attended the presentation of the Alliance, which took place last Monday, January 13, in Jaén.
The event was chaired by the President of the Regional Government of Andalusia, Juanma Moreno, who highlighted the objective of promoting an unprecedented roadmap, in collaboration with the sector, in which renewable energies, based on biogas, represent a unique and extraordinary opportunity to exploit the regional production potential. In this regard, the President of the Regional Government appealed to the public-private collaboration that characterizes Andalusian economic policy.
